Sex and Couples Therapy

What is Sex Therapy?

Sex therapists identify that sex and sexuality is part of being human and recognizes that there is essential value to sex and sexual freedom. It is not unrelated to the self, culture, family system, historical experiences, social pressures, and identity intersections, but is a creation of all of these and more. Sex therapy is therapy where we talk openly and frankly about sex and sexual challenges. There are a number of conditions that may frequently require a referral to a sex therapist.

  • Diminished desire

  • Pelvic pain during sex/ inability to engage in penetrative sex

  • Premature ejaculation/ erectile disorders

  • Sexual trauma

  • Delayed or an inability to ejaculate

  • Orgasmic disorders

Sex therapists often work with polycules and individuals and couples navigating sex and relational challenges. Sex therapy may be provided to individuals, couples, polycules, and other relational groups.

What is Couples Counseling?

Couples counseling will often touch on sexual challenges and discrepancies between partners but may also include other challenges such as financial pressures, childrearing, familial challenges, religious differences, and moving through developmental milestones while maintaining the strength and connection of the couple or group. Participating in couples counseling can allow a couple or group heal from relational ruptures and come to a joint resolution that honors each individual’s needs and desires. It is important that each member that attends is motivated to participate. Couples counselors can assist with

  • Navigating infidelity

  • Reconnecting couples and groups that have grown apart

  • Managing mental health concerns

  • Structuring a new or different relationship

  • Understanding changes to sexual or gender identity
